Senior discounts are applied to many essential products and services offered to people who have reached retirement age. These include transportation services in some parts of the world, repair work and maintenance offered by tradesmen, and even some theater and cinema entertainments. There are also services which are set up purely for the benefit of seniors and those approaching retirement age, such as over 50 dating, and these are often priced competitively to attract greater numbers.

So much of your financial planning after retirement will need to take local conditions into account, and this is nowhere better demonstrated than in transportation. The railway operators have been struggling with dwindling passenger numbers on many lines are often not in a position to offer subsidies, while governments still seem to have a policy of wanting everyone to travel by road. In the rare cases where subsidized travel is offered, it is likely that the discount will only be for a small portion of the fare instead of the large discount sometimes available on buses. The situation is often different if you have some type of disability such as poor sight or even if you are in a wheelchair. Again, local rules are different in each region.

It is not just in travel where senior discounts are often applied, nor is it only from large organizations. It is common to find small businesses offering discounts to seniors for any home maintenance or improvement work, including building work, interior design, carpet laying, or even the installation of television aerials and satellite dishes. Even though there may not be a great deal of profit in these transactions for the business, they seem happy to offer them as a way of increasing goodwill and attracting more regular paying customers.

These discounts can help seniors to live in a better way than they would without them, and they can even help them have money left over once the essentials of life have been paid for. This money can be used for luxuries and entertainments, and there are some discounts to be found here also. Theaters will typically sell a ticket to seniors cheaper than they would sell it to the general population, even though the discounts are usually small. Everything adds up, and the discount can often help you attend one or two more events than you otherwise would.

Most senior discounts are organized locally or by the organization which has the special promotion, so it can be difficult to keep track of unless you are a regular customer somewhere. The Internet is the best way of finding out which discounts are offered in which places, and this can be important if you are comparing prices between two different alternatives. Being able to gather all of the relevant information in one place is essential if you are going to find the best deals possible, yet there are still providers which neglect their online presence. You will sometimes need to search local media to find all available senior discounts.
