Why Elderly Parents Do Not Have To Be A Burden
Elderly parents can be a burden on children if they are becoming frail and ill, and are in need of regular assistance. It is not that many of them want to be such a burden, and a lot of them feel guilty about the situation, but they are genuinely concerned about their ability to manage by themselves, or to find the right assistance for their needs. The good news is that in most cases, there are more support options open to them than they realize.
If you are a parent and you want to leave your children with as few burdens as possible, you can achieve the greatest step towards this by making sure that your finances are in the best shape possible. The earlier you start to plan, the better, especially when it comes to your property and your insurance. The expense of residential care will need to be met somehow should you ever need it, and in any case you will need to defray the expenses of your funeral. Investing in real estate is the wisest move you can make, followed by taking advantage of government tax concessions in planning for retirement. Do these steps well, and you can have both a capital sum and an income when you retire.
Whether or not you plan well financially, you will still need to cope with the problems of day to day living in an aging body. In order to avoid being a burden to your children, you will need to either go into a residential care home or be able to cope at home. Nearly all retirees want to remain in their own home as long as they possibly can, before either being forced into care or dying of old age. This can often be achieved with the right support, and this does not have to come from other family members. In many areas, there are organizations which can provide volunteers to carry out routine tasks.
The majority of elderly parents are able to stay in their own homes and receive in house care, even if they have reached the stage where there are tasks they cannot do without assistance. The volunteer organizations are able to take on any task the seniors cannot do for themselves, unless they involve a need for qualifications and proven expertise. They cannot do electrical work, or plumbing repairs, and obviously not any medical work which would be carried out by a trained physician.
The biggest worry that most children have as their parents reach retirement age is that they will need to go into residential care, and that they will face a burden to pay for it. This should not happen if the right planning has been carried out beforehand, but it is not something which can be put into place at a moment's notice. If residential care is needed, the important consideration is to find the home which is going to provide the right conditions for the elderly parent, as they will have a difficult time facing the inevitable in any case.
If elderly parents are to be given the chance to live out the rest of their lives in dignity, there will be some preparation needed. This may or may not involve a contribution from the children, but even if it does there is no need for it to be a large one. The days when parents lived as part of an extended family in the same house are long gone, and there are more organizations than ever before to help senior parents stay independent. Find out what help will be available in your local area for your elderly parents.
